Consumers Guide to Online AP Courses

Welcome to the Consumers Guide to Online AP Courses, a resource for students, parents, and educators to learn about and find online Advanced Placement (AP)* courses.

Online courses are an increasingly popular way for students of all ages to learn, and online AP courses in particular are being offered in many states as one way to expand AP opportunities. By eliminating constraints of time and distance, online AP courses allow students to have access to high quality courses from skilled teachers even if they are attending a school that does not offer such courses. Students in many states around the county have found success with online AP courses and have gone on to perform well on an AP exam.

If you are just discovering online education opportunities, knowing how and where to look for courses can be a challenging task. This site provides the information you need, whether you are a student, a parent, or an educator. It includes background information on online AP courses, questions you should ask a course provider, and a state-by-state guide to the programs providing courses.

This site is created by the Western Consortium for Accelerated Learning Opportunities (WCALO), a consortium of nine Western states - Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, and Utah - whose mission is to increase the successful participation of low-income students in pre-AP and AP courses and tests. The Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) began WCALO in 2000 with funding from the Advanced Placement Incentive Program (APIP) of the U.S. Department of Education.
